NC State’s Aziaha James Finds Inspiration in Late Brother, Leads Team to Final Four

NC State guard Aziaha James has been on fire in the NCAA women’s tournament, leading her team to the Final Four for the first time in 26 years. But her success on the court is fueled by a deep and personal motivation: the memory of her older brother, Ashley “AJ” James, who tragically passed away in an accidental shooting four years ago.

Aziaha’s mother, Latoya Jackson, believes that her son’s spirit is guiding her daughter to victory from above. She can feel his presence when Aziaha plays, knowing that he is watching over her and cheering her on every step of the way.

Despite facing tough competition in the upcoming Final Four game against No. 1 seed South Carolina, Aziaha remains confident and inspired. She credits her brother’s voice in her head, pushing her to give her all on the court and never back down.

Growing up in Virginia Beach, Aziaha and her brother Ashley were inseparable, both excelling in basketball and becoming the first siblings to be named All-Tidewater in Virginia. Tragically, Ashley’s life was cut short just hours after watching his sister play in a regional high school championship game.

Despite the heartbreak of losing her brother, Aziaha has continued to honor his memory through her play on the court. She has overcome challenges and setbacks to become a standout player for NC State, leading her team to unexpected success in the tournament.

As Aziaha prepares to face off against South Carolina in the Final Four, she carries her brother’s memory with her, knowing that he is always watching over her and cheering her on. With his spirit as her guiding force, Aziaha is determined to make her brother proud and lead her team to victory.
