Dame Dash Claims The Notorious B.I.G. and Diddy “Copied” Him and JAY-Z, Leading to Early Friction

In a recent interview on political commentator Patrick Bet-David’s PBD Podcast, Dame Dash, co-founder of Roc-A-Fella Records, made some bold claims about The Notorious B.I.G. and Diddy, suggesting that they had copied his and JAY-Z’s style, leading to friction between the two camps in the mid-1990s.

Dash recalled how he used to smoke with Biggie, revealing that he and JAY-Z felt that Biggie and Puffy were copying their lifestyle. He mentioned that whenever they saw them in the club, it seemed like the next day a record would be made, insinuating that they were imitating their hustle and success.

Despite the initial confrontations, Dash admitted that they eventually became cool with Biggie and his crew. However, the accusations of copying did not stop there, as JAY-Z himself has been accused of biting Biggie’s style, most notably by Nas in his diss track “Ether.”

JAY-Z has defended his use of Biggie’s lyrics in his music, explaining that it is a way to keep his late friend’s memory alive and pay homage to his influence on his own work. He emphasized the importance of Biggie in his career, stating that he takes him everywhere he goes, whether in concert or on record.

The ongoing debate about influence and originality in hip-hop continues to be a hot topic, with artists like Dash and JAY-Z shedding light on the complexities of the industry and the relationships between artists.
