H.E.R. Teams Up with Oprah Winfrey and Scott Sanders for Majorettes-Inspired HBCU Film
H.E.R. is making waves in Hollywood with her latest project, a Majorettes-inspired HBCU film set to be developed at 20th Century Studios. Teaming up with powerhouse producers Oprah Winfrey and Scott Sanders, the talented artist is set to take on a triple role in the film: developing, producing, and starring.
Inspired by the influence of majorettes on Black culture, H.E.R. pitched the concept to Winfrey and Sanders following their successful collaboration on The Color Purple. The production will be a joint effort between H.E.R., Winfrey’s Harpo Films, and Sanders’ Scott Sanders Productions, with Lauren Ashley Smith on board as the writer.
The film’s official synopsis follows an introverted ballet dancer from L.A. who defies her parents by putting her dance career on hold to attend college. Joining her HBCU’s struggling majorette team, she must navigate culture shock, her dance background, and fierce rivals to help the team reclaim its former glory.
Described as a funny and joyous celebration of authentic HBCU life, the film will explore the majorette traditions that have become a cultural touchstone in college and Black culture over the last 50 years. With H.E.R. at the helm, this project promises to be a vibrant and impactful addition to the world of cinema.
