Edward Waters Wins First SIAC Baseball Championship with Ferante Cowart’s Grand Slam
In a thrilling comeback victory, Edward Waters University’s baseball team secured their first SIAC Baseball Championship with a 10-5 win over Savannah State on Sunday afternoon. The game was a rollercoaster of emotions, with Savannah State taking an early lead before Edward Waters fought back to tie the game multiple times.
The turning point came in the bottom of the eighth inning when Ferante Cowart stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a grand slam over the left-center field wall, giving EWU a 9-5 lead. This electrifying moment sparked a six-run inning for Edward Waters, ultimately leading them to victory.
Freshman Elvin Polanco was called in to pitch the final inning, securing the win and the conference title for Edward Waters. Cowart’s grand slam was the highlight of the game, earning him four RBIs and solidifying his place as a key player for the team.
Despite the loss, Savannah State will still earn the SIAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Baseball Tournament, as Edward Waters is in the final year of their transition to the NCAA.
