Controversy Surrounds Florida A&M’s Historic Donation: A Closer Look at the $237 Million Gift

Florida A&M University found itself in the midst of controversy this week following the announcement of a historic near-quarter-billion dollar gift from Batterson Farms Corporation founder and CEO Gregory Gerami. The $237 million donation, the largest ever for any Historically Black College or University (HBCU), raised eyebrows and sparked skepticism among the public.

In response to the growing concerns, Gerami and the university held a joint press conference on Tuesday to address the issue. Gerami defended the legitimacy of the donation, stating that the stocks had been transferred to the university over a month ago and were already in a financial account. He expressed frustration with the skepticism, attributing it to misinformation and the lack of an internet presence.

Despite the reassurances from Gerami and Florida A&M, doubts continued to circulate on social media and in the press. A column by Jerell Blakely of Education News Flash questioned whether the university had been deceived by the sizable gift, prompting a response from Florida A&M.

The university released a statement affirming that they had conducted due diligence on the matter and that Gerami was also actively involved in ensuring the legitimacy of the donation. Plans to sell off the stock before the end of the year were mentioned, but details were limited due to a non-disclosure agreement.

The controversy led FAMU Board of Trustees vice chair Deveron Gibbons to call for an emergency meeting to address transparency concerns surrounding the donation. Gibbons emphasized the need for thorough inquiry and transparency in handling a donation of this magnitude.

As the situation unfolds, Florida A&M University remains under scrutiny as they navigate the aftermath of this historic gift.
