FAMU School of Journalism & Graphic Communication Students Honored at Sports Emmy Awards

Florida A&M University School of Journalism & Graphic Communication students have once again made their mark in the world of media, as they were recently honored at the 45th annual Sports Emmy Awards in New York. The students were recognized for their outstanding documentary about the school’s most recent Pro Football Hall of Fame member, Ken Riley.

The documentary, titled “Field Trip,” was a seven-minute film that showcased the life and legacy of the late Ken Riley, who was not only a Pro Football Hall of Famer but also an alum of FAMU. The project was led by FAMU TV-20 General Manager Edward Thomas and featured the talents of students Jonathan David, Darnell Walker, Germanie Bozeman, Tristian Hutton, and Jalon Howard.

Howard, a current FAMU football player, took on the role of portraying Riley in the film, while the other students played crucial roles in the production process. Their hard work and dedication paid off as they were awarded the 2024 Coca-Cola HBCU Sports Production grant during the ceremony, receiving a $40,000 grant for their exceptional work.

Jonathan David, the director, producer, and writer of “Field Trip,” expressed his gratitude for the recognition and highlighted the importance of diversity in sports media and journalism. The competition, sponsored by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the Coca-Cola Company, aims to showcase the talents of Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the field of sports media.

This win marks the second consecutive year that FAMU journalism students have been recognized for their outstanding work, solidifying their reputation as rising stars in the industry. The students’ creative storytelling and impactful portrayal of Ken Riley’s legacy have truly set them apart, earning them well-deserved recognition on a national stage.
