The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and the Chris Paul Family Foundation have joined forces to create an exciting new event in the world of college basketball – the Chris Paul HBCU Challenge. This two-day tournament, set to take place at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn., on Dec. 19-20, promises to be more than just a series of games.
Featuring teams from historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), the Chris Paul HBCU Challenge will showcase the talents of Alabama State, Delaware State, Grambling State, Norfolk State, Benedict College, Lincoln University, Kentucky State, and Winston-Salem State. The format of the tournament will see the games played concurrently at the same venue, a departure from previous years.
NBA star Chris Paul expressed his excitement for the event, stating, “I’m excited to continue to grow the game of basketball through our HBCU tournaments. These games present a unique opportunity for student-athletes to play on a national stage and receive their well-deserved recognition.”
Coaches from participating schools also shared their enthusiasm for the tournament, with Grambling State head coach Donte Jackson calling it an “incredible event” and Norfolk State head coach Robert Jones expressing his excitement at being invited back.
With matchups like Delaware State vs. Grambling and Kentucky State vs. Benedict College on the schedule, fans can expect intense competition and thrilling basketball action. The championship and consolation games on the second day will surely provide a fitting conclusion to what promises to be a memorable event for HBCU basketball.
