New York Mayor Eric Adams Revokes Sean “Diddy” Combs’ Key to the City
New York City Mayor Eric Adams made a bold move by presenting Sean “Diddy” Combs with the keys to the city in Times Square on September 15, 2023. This gesture marked the end of Diddy’s reign as the unofficial king of New York City, as he had recently returned the key following a series of controversies.
Less than 10 months after being granted the key to the city, Diddy reportedly returned it on June 10 amidst legal troubles stemming from a viral 2016 video showing him physically assaulting Cassie Ventura. This incident, along with numerous sexual assault lawsuits, prompted Mayor Adams to take action.
After internal deliberations, the Key to the City committee recommended nullifying and rescinding Diddy’s key. Mayor Adams accepted this recommendation, stating, “The Key to the City of New York is presented to individuals whose service to the public and the common good rises to the highest level of achievement, and who act as a model for fellow and future New Yorkers.”
In addition to losing the key to the city, Diddy faced further consequences, including stepping down as owner of his media company Revolt, rescinding his honorary doctorate degree, ending a scholarship program in his name, and returning a $1 million donation he had made.
Mayor Adams made it clear that he condemns Diddy’s actions and stands in solidarity with all survivors of domestic and gender-based violence. This decision marks a significant turning point in Diddy’s career and reputation in New York City.
