Denzel Washington Reflects on Relationship with Whitney Houston Nearly 30 Years After “The Preacher’s Wife”

In a heartfelt conversation at the American Black Film Festival, Denzel Washington opened up about his relationship with the late Whitney Houston, nearly 30 years after they starred together in the hit film “The Preacher’s Wife.”

Reflecting on his time with Houston before her untimely death in 2012, Washington shared how he felt a strong desire to protect her, despite her tough exterior. He acknowledged Houston’s vulnerability and the struggles she faced, particularly with addiction.

“Whitney was my girl, and she had done so well in recovery. And that is the toughest part about addiction. And that was a monster drug that got a hold of her, it was a mean one. You can’t go back to that one. Nobody beats that,” Washington said during the conversation.

Houston was found in a Beverly Hills Hotel room in February 2012, with her death ruled as an accidental drowning with the effects of heart disease and cocaine use.

During the conversation, Washington also gave a sneak peek at his upcoming film “The Piano Lesson,” which he produced and stars Samuel L. Jackson, Danielle Brooks, and his son, John David Washington. He hinted at a potential shift in his career, expressing a desire to focus more on projects behind the camera.

As fans eagerly await the release of “The Piano Lesson” on Netflix this fall, Washington’s reflections on his time with Houston serve as a poignant reminder of the impact she had on those around her.
