Jarell Lee: From Homeless Shelter to Principal, Rapper, and Mentor
Jarell Lee’s journey from growing up in a single-parent household in Cleveland, Ohio to becoming the principal and founder of KIPP Academy Chicago Primary is nothing short of inspiring. Despite facing homelessness and adversity, Lee’s determination and hard work have led him to achieve remarkable success in both his personal and professional life.
After graduating from Harvard University with degrees in sociology and African-American studies, Lee went on to earn two Master’s degrees and eventually found his calling in education. As the principal of KIPP Academy Chicago Primary, he is dedicated to providing underprivileged children with the same opportunities he was fortunate enough to have.
However, Lee’s impact goes beyond the classroom. In addition to his role as an educator, he is also a husband and father of two, as well as a talented rapper. Lee’s passion for music has led him to create rap songs to commemorate each school year, bringing a sense of fun and relevance to the learning environment.
Despite the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, Lee and his team at KIPP Academy Chicago Primary have persevered, ensuring that their students continue to receive a quality education. This past year, Lee celebrated the graduation of his first cohort of students, marking a significant milestone for the school.
