Grambling State Infielders Excited to Return to Ken Griffey Jr. HBCU Swingman Classic
Grambling State third baseman Cameron Bufford and second baseman Kyle Walker are gearing up for the upcoming Ken Griffey Jr. HBCU Swingman Classic, set to take place on Friday, July 12, at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. The duo, who are veterans of the event, recently shared their excitement during an interview with MLB Network at the Draft Combine in Phoenix, Arizona.
Walker expressed his enthusiasm for returning to the Classic, describing it as a “wonderful opportunity” and reminiscing about the amazing atmosphere and fan support from last year’s game. Bufford, on the other hand, recalled the surreal moment of meeting Ken Griffey Jr. for the first time during the previous year’s event in Seattle.
Both players highlighted the importance of programs like MLB’s RBI Program and Breakthrough in providing visibility and opportunities for HBCU baseball players like themselves. They emphasized how these initiatives have helped showcase their talents and allowed them to compete on a larger stage.
The Tigers, led by Bufford and Walker, recently clinched their first SWAC baseball title since 2010 and made a strong showing in the NCAA tournament. As they prepare to represent Grambling State once again at the HBCU Swingman Classic, Bufford and Walker are grateful for the chance to showcase their skills and continue to inspire young athletes in their community.
