Trial Date Postponed for Corey Walker in Pop Smoke Murder Case
The trial of Corey Walker, the only adult defendant charged in the 2020 murder of rapper Pop Smoke, has been postponed to early August after plea negotiations with prosecutors fell through. Walker, 23, has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, robbery, and burglary in connection with the tragic incident that took the life of the rising star.
Originally scheduled to begin next week, the trial will now commence with jury selection on August 6 and is expected to last three and a half weeks. Walker’s lawyer, Deion Benjamin, mentioned that there is still a possibility of reaching an agreement with prosecutors, but certain issues need to be resolved first.
Three other defendants, including the 15-year-old shooter, were charged as juveniles in the case. The shooter admitted to killing Pop Smoke during a home invasion, while the other two juveniles also pleaded guilty to their involvement in the crime. Despite the severity of the charges, the sentences for the juvenile defendants have raised questions about the adequacy of the punishment for such heinous crimes.
During the robbery, Pop Smoke was pistol-whipped and shot multiple times, leading to his untimely death. The robbers allegedly stole his diamond-studded Rolex watch and sold it for a mere $2,000. The evidence presented in court, including Walker’s Google search history, suggests his involvement in planning the crime, although his previous lawyer argued that he was not a major participant.
As the trial date approaches, the question remains whether Walker will be held accountable for his alleged role in the murder of Pop Smoke. The details of the case have shocked the music industry and fans of the late rapper, highlighting the tragic consequences of senseless violence.
