Douglas County Judge Facing Felony Charge After Alleged Assault at Atlanta Nightclub
Judge Christina J. Peterson, a Douglas County judge, is facing a felony charge after being arrested at a north Atlanta nightclub for allegedly hitting a police officer. The incident occurred at Red Martini Restaurant and Lounge, where Peterson, 38, was said to be under the influence and refused to identify herself.
According to reports, Peterson is charged with willful obstruction of law enforcement officers by use of threats or violence and simple battery against a police officer. She was released on a $5,000 bond after being jailed following the incident. Peterson has claimed that she was trying to help a woman who was being attacked by men when she accidentally hit the officer, resulting in bruises, a black eye, and a swollen knee.
This arrest comes amidst a series of controversies surrounding Peterson, including accusations of ethical misconduct and judicial incompetence. The Judicial Qualifications Commission has recommended her removal from office, citing a disregard for the law. Peterson, who made history as the first Black probate judge in Douglas County, has seen a decline in her approval rate and recently lost the Democratic vote in a primary election.
Incumbent Peterson was defeated by Douglasville attorney Valerie Vie, who is now the Democratic nominee for the upcoming election. The Georgia Supreme Court has yet to decide on Peterson’s fate in office. With her term ending this year, the future of Judge Christina J. Peterson remains uncertain as she faces legal and political challenges.
