Family of Black Man Who Died in Hotel Detainment Speak Out Against Authorities’ Claims
The family of D’Vontaye Mitchell, a Black man who died following a detainment by hotel security guards, is speaking out against authorities’ claims that he was aggressive. Mitchell, 37, was tackled to the ground by four security guards at the Hyatt Regency on June 30, as captured on bystander video. Despite initial allegations from Milwaukee police that Mitchell caused a disturbance and was aggressive, his family insists he wasn’t a threat.
In a press conference, Mitchell’s wife, DeAsia Harmon, tearfully described how the guards beat and kicked him as he was chased out of the hotel. Civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump, representing the family, revealed that a hotel employee witnessed Mitchell being beaten with a baton while not posing a threat. The medical examiner’s office ruled his death a homicide, and the case is under investigation by the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s office.
As protests erupt in Milwaukee ahead of the Republican National Convention, Mitchell’s family is determined to seek justice for his death. They fear his case will be overshadowed by the upcoming political event, but Crump emphasized that Mitchell’s life is just as important as anything else happening in the city.
The family is demanding justice for Mitchell and will continue to fight for accountability in his tragic death. The community stands in solidarity with them as they seek answers and seek to hold those responsible for his death accountable.
