Morehouse College President David Thomas Announces Retirement in 2025
Morehouse College President David Thomas has announced that the 2024-25 academic year will be his last, as reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Thomas stated that the decision to retire was his own and not influenced by recent criticism from Morehouse stakeholders following President Joe Bidenโs Spring 2024 commencement, which was marred by protests surrounding the conflict between Israel and Palestine.
In a statement released on Friday evening, Thomas expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve as Morehouse president, calling it the “honor of a lifetime.” He highlighted his commitment to the institution and its vision, stating that the best time for a leadership transition is when an institution is strong and well-positioned to achieve its goals.
Thomas plans to take some time off with his family before assisting Morehouse College in completing its ambitious 500-million-dollar capital campaign. The University has already achieved more than half of this goal, with improvements including renovations to campus halls, the B.T. Harvey Stadium field turf, the Edwin Moses track, and the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel.
Having served as Morehouse president since 2018, Thomas leaves behind a legacy of dedication and commitment to the institution. As he prepares to step down, he looks forward to welcoming new leadership that can bring fresh perspectives and energy to address challenges and discover new opportunities for Morehouse College.
