Morehouse College President David Thomas Announces Retirement, Search for Replacement Begins

Morehouse College President David Thomas has announced his retirement, signaling a new era for the prominent historically Black institution. Thomas, who has led the all-male college since 2018, will step down on June 30, 2025, stating that it is time for new leadership to take the helm.

Under Thomas’ leadership, Morehouse College has seen significant growth and development. Enrollment has increased from 1,700 to 2,200 students, with a record number of applications received last year. The school’s endowment has more than doubled to $280 million, and a $170 million campus improvement project is underway.

Despite these achievements, Thomas faced criticism this year for inviting President Joe Biden to speak at the school’s graduation ceremony. Some faculty, students, and alumni objected to the invitation due to Biden’s support of Israel in its conflict with Hamas. Thomas stood by his decision to invite the president, meeting with protest leaders but ultimately not rescinding the invitation.

As the board of trustees begins the search for Thomas’ successor, the next president of Morehouse College will inherit a strong foundation for continued growth and success. The institution, known for its distinguished alumni such as Martin Luther King Jr., Spike Lee, and Samuel L. Jackson, is poised for a new chapter under fresh leadership. Thomas, who plans to remain on the school’s faculty, expressed confidence in the college’s future and its ability to thrive under new guidance.
