Common Reflects on How Nas’ ‘Illmatic’ Inspired His Resurrection Album
Common, the Chicago native, recently shared how a pre-release copy of Nas’ iconic album “Illmatic” inspired him to elevate his game and create his sophomore album, Resurrection, back in 1994. In a conversation with Miss Info at EEEEEEATSCON, Common revealed the pivotal role that Nas’ early copy played in shaping his music.
Recalling the moment he received the album from Miss Info, Common expressed, “That album won’t be what it is if I hadn’t gotten that Nas Illmatic early copy. I saw the level that we needed to function at, and it’s amazing.” This experience led him back to the studio to refine and enhance his own work.
Common also discussed his recent joint album with Pete Rock, highlighting the full circle moment of performing over beats produced by Pete Rock, who worked on Nas’ “The World Is Yours.” This collaboration underscores the interconnectedness of Hip Hop history and the influence of artists like Nas on the genre.
Reflecting on the impact of Nas’ storytelling in “Illmatic,” Common emphasized the importance of creating music that resonates with listeners on a personal level. He credited Nas for changing his outlook and inspiring him to think differently about his own artistry.
Despite their shared history and collaborations over the years, Common revealed that he and Nas had discussed the possibility of a joint album titled “Nas Dot Com,” but the project never materialized. Nonetheless, the influence of Nas’ music continues to shape Common’s creative journey in Hip Hop.
