Amid Concerns of Retaliation and Safety, Experts Warn of Extremist Groups Following Trump Assassination Attempt

Following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, leaders and experts are expressing concerns about potential retaliatory actions and the safety of Black and brown communities leading up to Election Day.

Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. Austin Davis expressed his concerns about the rise in political violence and the need for Americans to exercise their rights without fear. However, white extremist expert Rachel Carroll Rivas of the Southern Poverty Law Center warned that conspiracy theories surrounding the shooting are already inciting far-right corners of the internet.

Rivas highlighted how far-right figures and extremists are spreading conspiracies about the shooting, including false claims about the shooter’s identity and motives. She also noted that these theories are gaining traction on less-moderated social platforms like Telegram and X.

While there are concerns about extremist groups being emboldened by the assassination attempt, Rivas pointed out that the infrastructure of these movements has been weakened by the prosecutions of Jan. 6 insurrectionists. She also mentioned that groups like the Proud Boys have not mobilized in the same way as in previous years.

As Election Day approaches, elected officials are vowing to protect election systems and ensure the safety of voters and election workers. Concerns about physical safety and harassment have been raised, particularly in light of the Trump campaign’s plans to deploy volunteers to monitor polling stations.

Overall, experts are calling for a de-escalation of tensions and for measures to address underlying issues like mental health and access to firearms that contribute to political violence. The hope is that the aftermath of the Trump assassination attempt will serve as a moment for both sides of the political divide to work towards peace and unity.
