“Netflix’s Hit London Sci-Fi Drama ‘Supacell’ Raises Awareness for Sickle Cell Disease”

The new London sci-fi drama “Supacell” has taken the world by storm, captivating audiences with its unique portrayal of sickle cell disease and superpowers. Since its release on Netflix last month, the show has amassed over 11.8 million views, securing the No. 1 spot on the streaming platform’s global Top 10 list.

Creator Rapman, also known as Andrew Onwubolu, intentionally used “Supacell” to raise awareness about sickle cell disease, a condition that affects over 20 million people worldwide. The show follows a group of Black South Londoners who develop superpowers related to their sickle cell trait, such as telekinesis and speed.

Rapman explained his motivation for creating the show, stating, “Before ‘Supacell,’ ask anyone about sickle cell, and one out of five people know about it. It’s crazy how unknown it is, especially for a disease that affects so many people.” He wanted to make people with sickle cell feel seen and heard, and the response from viewers has been overwhelmingly positive.

The show’s inception began shortly after George Floyd’s murder in 2020, with Rapman wanting to uplift Black communities impacted by sickle cell disease. Through its nuanced representation of the Black experience, “Supacell” addresses a range of issues, including discrimination, domestic abuse, and prison rehabilitation.

Ultimately, Rapman hopes the series inspires more people to understand and advocate for sickle cell disease. He envisions a world where sickle cell centers, like the one depicted in the show, become a reality, providing support and resources for those affected by the condition. “Supacell” not only entertains but also educates and empowers its viewers, shedding light on an often overlooked health issue.
