Missy Elliott Makes History as First Rapper to Have Song Transmitted in Space

Missy Elliott has made history once again, becoming the first rapper to have her song transmitted into space. NASA’s Deep Space Network announced that Elliott’s hit song “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” was sent from Earth to Venus, her favorite planet, at the speed of light.

This groundbreaking achievement marks the first time a hip-hop song has been played in space, with NASA previously transmitting The Beatles’ “Across the Universe” in 2008. Brittany Brown, director of the Digital and Technology Division at NASA Headquarters, expressed excitement about the collaboration with Elliott, stating that both space exploration and the rapper’s art are about pushing boundaries.

Elliott, known for her futuristic visuals and space-centric storytelling in her music videos, shared her excitement about the transmission to Venus. She explained that she chose Venus because it symbolizes strength, beauty, and empowerment, and she is honored to share her art and message with the universe.

This milestone comes on the heels of a series of accolades for Elliott, including receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the MTV Video Music Awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Currently on tour with fellow artists Ciara, Timbaland, and Busta Rhymes, Elliott continues to push boundaries and inspire with her music and creativity.
