Florida Commissioner Trey Nick Faces Backlash Over Racist Text Messages

Ex-Florida Commissioner Trey Nick is facing backlash after disturbing texts he sent to other officials were revealed in public records. The texts, which included derogatory language and racial slurs, were sent to former Assistant County Attorney Heather Maxwell and current commissioner Tony Anderson back in 2022.

In the messages, Nick referred to individuals as "ni****s" and "monkeys at the circus," sparking outrage and condemnation from the community. NAACP Chapter President Frank Guillory called the texts "disturbing" and emphasized the need for respect and maturity in today’s society.

At a recent board meeting addressing Nick’s actions, concerned residents, including Todd Roark, expressed their disappointment in the county’s response to the scandal. Roark stated that silence on the issue is unacceptable and called for accountability from the commissioners.

Despite facing previous controversies, including a sexual harassment lawsuit and misuse of taxpayer money, Nick has not faced criminal charges or consequences for his alleged activities. However, his recent racist remarks have reignited scrutiny on his behavior.

While Nick and his team have not released any statements addressing the allegations, he is still set to be on the ballot for reelection on Nov. 5. The community continues to demand accountability and respect from their elected officials in light of this troubling revelation.
