NABJ Faces Backlash Over Invitation to Former President Trump: A Discussion with April Ryan and April Reign

The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) is facing intense backlash after inviting former President Donald Trump to speak at its annual convention in Chicago. The decision has sparked outrage among members and the wider Black media community, with many questioning the organization’s commitment to supporting Black journalists.

In a recent interview with TheGrio’s April Ryan, creative consultant April Reign criticized NABJ for failing to hold Trump accountable for his past derogatory remarks towards Black women journalists. Despite condemning Trump’s treatment of journalists like Ryan, Abby Phillip, and Yamiche Alcindor in 2018, NABJ still extended an invitation to the former president.

During the panel at the convention, Trump clashed with ABC News correspondent Rachel Scott, who challenged him on his racist statements. Trump dismissed Scott’s question as “rude” and “nasty,” continuing his pattern of attacking Black reporters and prosecutors who have held him accountable.

The fallout from Trump’s appearance has prompted NABJ’s founders to address the controversy and establish a strategic governance plan. However, many are criticizing the organization for its lack of accountability and failure to address the issues raised by Trump’s presence at the convention.

Despite the shocking moments during the panel, including Trump’s false claims about Vice President Kamala Harris, NABJ has remained silent on the matter. The organization’s decision to invite Trump has raised serious concerns about its commitment to supporting and uplifting Black journalists in the industry.
