The GOP’s Misogynoir and Stereotypes of Black Women: A Closer Look at the Attacks on Kamala Harris

The Republicans are resorting to racist and misogynistic attacks against Vice President Kamala Harris as she emerges as a potential Democratic nominee for president. The GOP’s strategy is to tap into negative media stereotypes of Black women in an attempt to discredit Harris and her qualifications.

From calling Harris a “DEI vice president” to questioning her Blackness, Republicans are using racial stereotypes to undermine her credibility. These attacks reflect a larger issue of misogynoir in society, where Black women are dehumanized and reduced to harmful stereotypes.

The GOP’s use of racial tropes like the “Sapphire,” “Mammy,” “Jezebel,” “Welfare Queen,” and “Tragic Mulatto” against Harris is not only offensive but also perpetuates harmful narratives about Black women. These stereotypes have been used for centuries to oppress and marginalize Black women, and the Republicans are weaponizing them for political gain.
