Tim Walz’s Record of Support for Black and Marginalized Communities
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, the vice presidential running mate of Kamala Harris, may be seen as an “old white guy,” but his record shows a commitment to Black and marginalized communities. Fred Redmond, secretary-treasurer at AFL-CIO, praised Walz for his support of legislation benefiting these communities during his time in Congress and as governor.
Walz signed a bill in 2023 restoring the voting rights of formerly incarcerated Minnesotans, allowing 50,000 individuals to rejoin the voting rolls. He also championed universal school meals, public safety laws, and grants for career pathways into union trade jobs for people of color and low-income individuals.
Markus Batchelor of People For the American Way believes Walz’s record will assure Black voters of having a champion in the White House. Additionally, Walz’s appeal to white working-class voters and suburbanites could strengthen the Democratic coalition.
Despite his likability, Republicans criticize Walz for his delayed response to sending the National Guard during Black Lives Matter protests in Minneapolis following George Floyd’s murder. Walz defended his actions, stating he acted based on the information available at the time.
Democratic strategist Joel Payne believes Walz’s straightforward style can resonate in a political environment filled with misinformation. Despite Republican attacks, supporters like Minnesota Attorney Keith Ellison praise Walz for his involvement in prosecuting Derek Chauvin, showing his commitment to justice for the Black community.
Overall, Walz’s record and appeal across demographics make him a valuable addition to the Democratic ticket, ensuring a strong stance against the Trump administration and a commitment to racial justice.
