Chicago Businesses Prepare for Economic Boost from Democratic National Convention

The upcoming Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago is not only expected to bring in an estimated $150 to $200 million in economic impact but is also creating opportunities for small businesses in majority-Black neighborhoods to thrive. Stephanie Hart, owner of Brown Sugar Bakery, has already secured catering gigs for the event and is looking forward to showcasing her business during the convention.

Shermann “Dilla” Thomas, Chicago’s self-appointed urban historian, is using his tour company to highlight communities outside of the convention area, ensuring that the economic benefits reach all corners of the city. The DNC Host Committee has been actively engaging minority-owned businesses for contracting and hiring opportunities, aiming to create long-term investments in historically disinvested neighborhoods.

While some businesses like Sweet Beginnings were not selected as official vendors for the DNC, they have found partnerships to showcase their work and create job opportunities for marginalized communities. The Host Committee has also recruited thousands of volunteers through its Neighborhood Ambassadors Program, ensuring that local residents are involved in the convention’s success.

Beautification projects and infrastructure improvements are also underway in preparation for the DNC, with a focus on equitable distribution across all Chicago communities. The long-term impact of these efforts remains to be seen, but community members are hopeful that the convention will bring positive changes to their neighborhoods.

As the city gears up for the DNC, there is a sense of excitement and anticipation among residents like Stephanie Hart, who see the event as an opportunity to showcase Chicago’s diversity and vibrancy. With a focus on community engagement and economic empowerment, the DNC is poised to leave a lasting impact on the city and its residents.
