Court Sentences Chrystul Kizer to 11 Years in Prison for Fatal Shooting of Sex Trafficker
Chrystul Kizer, a young woman who has been fighting to prove her innocence in the fatal shooting of her sex trafficker, has finally received a response from the court on her self-defense claim. Unfortunately for Kizer, the news is not in her favor.
After admitting to fatally shooting Kenosha resident Randall Volar in 2018 and setting his house on fire, Kizer was sentenced to 11 years in prison and five years of extended supervision. However, the story goes much deeper than a simple act of violence.
Kizer, who was only 16 years old at the time of the shooting, accused Volar of sexually abusing her and trafficking her, along with other young Black girls. She detailed how Volar tried to lure her into sex with money and gifts, and spoke of the other girls being given synthetic drugs.
Despite evidence of Volar’s sexual abuse found in his home after a police raid, he was released the same day he was arrested. A few days later, Kizer arrived at Volar’s home with a firearm, claiming he became physical with her when she refused sex, leading to her shooting him twice in the head before fleeing in his car.
Advocates and sex abuse survivors have rallied behind Kizer, supporting her claim of self-defense. A 2022 Wisconsin Supreme Court ruling allowed her to present evidence in a trial to support her assertion that the shooting was a result of being prostituted. However, she entered a guilty plea in May to avoid a potential life sentence.
District Attorney Michael Graveley stated that Kizer will receive credit for the 570 days she has already spent awaiting trial, with a restitution hearing scheduled for November 8th.
