Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls Victorious in 2024 Red Tails Classic

The Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls kicked off their 2024 season in style with a 21-13 victory over the Tuskegee Golden Tigers in the Red Tails Classic. This win marked Tuskegee’s third straight loss against CIAA teams dating back to 2016, solidifying Johnson C. Smith’s dominance in the matchup.

While known for their defensive prowess, the Golden Bulls’ offense stole the show in the season opener. Running back Quavaris Crouch had a standout performance, rushing for 161 yards and scoring a 75-yard touchdown run to kick off the second half. Quarterback Darius Ocean also shined, throwing for 161 yards and two touchdowns, while also contributing on the ground and as a receiver. Receiver Brevin Caldwell led the team with 90 yards and two touchdowns.

On the defensive side, the Golden Bulls were equally impressive, holding Tuskegee to just 68 total yards in the first half and limiting their rushing game to a mere 50 yards, the lowest total since 2022. Benari Black stood out with 10 tackles and 2.0 tackles for loss.

Despite their strong performance, Johnson C. Smith’s 12 penalties nearly cost them the game. A crucial hands-to-the-face penalty gave Tuskegee a chance to tie the game in the final seconds, but the Golden Bulls’ defense held strong to secure the victory.

Overall, the Golden Bulls’ victory in the Red Tails Classic showcased their strength on both sides of the ball and set the tone for what promises to be an exciting season ahead.
