Tarana Burke Announces Global Expansion of #MeToo Movement and Launch of Global Network

Tarana Burke, the founder of the #MeToo movement, has announced a new initiative to combat sexual violence on a global scale. The organization she leads, ‘me too.’ International, has partnered with groups in 33 countries to address the issue of sexual misconduct and abuse.

In a recent interview, Burke highlighted the importance of the cultural shift brought about by the #MeToo movement in bringing cases of sexual abuse to light. She referenced the high-profile case of mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs, who is facing allegations of sexual crimes and is awaiting trial in a federal sex trafficking case.

Burke emphasized the impact of survivors organizing as part of the #MeToo movement in pushing for laws like the Adult Survivors Act, which allows individuals to file civil suits for sexual abuse even after the statute of limitations has expired. She noted that victims now feel more empowered to come forward and speak out against their abusers, knowing that they will be believed.

The new Global Network initiative aims to unite with 134 groups in 33 countries to collectively combat sexual and gender-based violence. The organization defines sexual violence as “a sexual act committed or attempted by a person without freely given consent.”

Burke’s ultimate goal is to expand the reach of the #MeToo movement and bring resources and collective action to communities around the world. By uniting women from different regions and backgrounds, the organization hopes to create a global community dedicated to ending sexual violence.

The announcement of the Global Network comes at a time when the fight against sexual misconduct and abuse continues to gain momentum, with survivors and advocates working together to create a safer and more just world for all.
