The Unexpected Consequences of Being Steve Urkel: Jaleel White Reveals Voice Damage and Lack of Support

Former child star Jaleel White, best known for his iconic role as Steve Urkel on the hit sitcom “Family Matters,” recently opened up about the unexpected consequences of portraying the lovable nerd. During a panel at ’90s Con in Daytona Beach, Fla., White revealed that constantly speaking in Steve’s signature high-pitched voice as a young actor had actually damaged his real voice.

“I spoke at the same pitch for extended periods of time during puberty, which caused damage to my voice,” White explained. “If the pitch had been more varied, I wouldn’t have experienced as much damage. It’s been in remission and I’m fine now.”

White also shared that he didn’t have a vocal coach on set to help him properly use and protect his voice, leading to further complications. However, now that he’s older and wiser, White has both a vocal coach and doctor to ensure his voice is “under control.”

Despite the vocal challenges he faced, White expressed gratitude for the support he received on the set of “Family Matters,” noting that his mother played a crucial role in keeping him safe from the pitfalls of the entertainment industry.

While White’s experience may be unique, it sheds light on the importance of providing young performers with the necessary support and guidance to protect their physical and mental well-being. As White continues to navigate his post-Urkel life, he serves as a reminder of the potential risks child stars face in the spotlight.
