Teenagers Take Joyriding to a New Level: NYC Teens Crash Empty Subway Car

Two New York City teens took joyriding to a whole new level this week when they got behind the wheel of an empty subway car in Queens. The 17-year-olds boarded an out-of-service train shortly after midnight on September 12 and managed to move about 50 feet before crashing into another empty subway car at the Briarwood subway station.

Surveillance footage from inside the train led police to the suspects, who were seen wearing distinctive clothing – one in a pink satin bonnet, crop top, and shorts, and the other in a blue tank top and red shorts. Both teens have been arrested and face charges of first-degree criminal mischief and reckless endangerment.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident, and there was minimal damage to the trains involved. However, authorities have condemned the teens’ actions as extremely foolish and reckless. Demetrius Crichlow, Interim Transit Authority President, emphasized that what started as a prank could have had a much more serious outcome.

The New York City Police Department shared news of the arrests on September 19 with a caption that humorously referenced the incident, saying, “Stand clear of the closing (jail cell) doors, please!” This incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of engaging in reckless behavior, even if it may seem like harmless fun at the time.
