Detroit Judge Demoted After Controversial Incident Involving Black Teen

Detroit Judge Kenneth King, who made headlines for his harsh treatment of a Black teenager who fell asleep in his courtroom, has faced further consequences upon his return from suspension.

In August, Judge King scolded 15-year-old Eva Goodman for dozing off during a court field trip, ordering her to wear a jail uniform, handcuffing her, and threatening to send her to juvenile detention. This incident led to King’s temporary suspension and mandatory social and emotional training.

Upon his return, King was demoted by Chief Judge William McConico to handling traffic tickets instead of major crime or felony cases. Additionally, King was removed from teaching two Fall 2024 courses at Wayne State University.

The teenager’s mother, Latoreya Till, has filed a lawsuit against King seeking over $75,000 for “ridiculing” and “berating” her daughter in front of her peers and on a live-stream from his private Facebook page. Till has also demanded a public apology from the judge.

Despite the backlash, King’s attorney, Todd Perkins, stated that the judge is embracing his new role and understands the concept of teamwork.

As the controversy continues to unfold, the community awaits to see how Judge King will navigate his new responsibilities and address the repercussions of his actions.
