The Hip Hop Caucus Shines Spotlight on Climate Justice at Green Carpet Premiere

On Monday evening, the Hip Hop Caucus made waves during Climate Week in New York with the Green Carpet Premiere of their short film, UNDERWATER PROJECTS. The event, attended by Hip Hop Caucus President & CEO Rev. Lennox Yearwood Jr. and COO Liz Havstad, along with environmental advocates like Anya Dillard, highlighted the urgent issue of coastal urban flooding in Virginia.

Narrated by comedian Wanda Sykes and directed by Liz Havstad, UNDERWATER PROJECTS delves into the threats posed by rising sea levels to the Hampton Roads area, home to the world’s largest naval base. The film showcases the vulnerabilities of local communities due to inadequate flood protection measures and profiles leaders working on climate resilience plans.

The premiere followed the virtual “We Shall Breathe” Summit, which addressed climate justice, economic inequality, and voting rights, particularly for marginalized communities. Musical performances from Jade Novah, Yellopain, and AY Young added to the event’s energy.

Hip Hop Caucus plans to host community screenings of UNDERWATER PROJECTS nationwide and has launched the Respect My Vote! campaign to engage Gen Z voters, voters of color, and returning citizens ahead of the 2024 Presidential Election. The organization’s commitment to activism through art and culture continues to make a powerful impact on environmental and social justice issues.
