The vice presidential debate between Democratic nominee, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, and Republican nominee, U.S. Sen. JD Vance, took a surprising turn as Vance faced criticism for his inability to tell the truth. Despite a relatively cordial debate, Vance’s false claims about Haitian migrants eating pets in Springfield, Ohio, sparked outrage.

Democratic strategist Ameshia Cross condemned Vance for perpetuating lies on a national stage, harming marginalized communities. During the debate, Vance suggested Haitians in Springfield were not in the U.S. legally, drawing sharp rebuke from Walz who accused him of vilifying and dehumanizing legal immigrants.

Critics like Jamarr Brown, executive director of Color of Change PAC, slammed Vance for dodging questions and parroting Trump’s playbook. Brown highlighted Vance’s refusal to acknowledge Trump’s loss in the 2020 election and his false claims about a peaceful transfer of power, despite the Jan. 6 Capitol attack.

Brown emphasized the importance of Black voter participation in the face of voter purges in states like Georgia and Texas. He urged vigilance to prevent politicians like Vance and Trump from unfairly wielding power. As the 2024 election looms, the need for accountability and truth in politics is more crucial than ever.
