Normani Opens Up About Being the Only Black Member of Fifth Harmony and Using Fashion as a Voice

Normani, the R&B singer and former member of Fifth Harmony, opened up about her experience as the only Black member of the popular girl group during an appearance at the launch of Law Roach’s new book in Los Angeles. She shared how she often felt “hidden” and not the standard of beauty in the music industry and society as a whole.

Using fashion as her outlet, Normani expressed herself when she felt like she wasn’t given the opportunity to have a voice. She credited fashion for saving her in many ways and allowing her to speak when she felt silenced. When Fifth Harmony disbanded in 2018, Normani made the transition to a solo career, grateful for the opportunity to do things her way after feeling hidden for so long.

Reflecting on her time in the group, Normani acknowledged that while the other girls were supportive, they may not have fully understood her experience as the only Black member. Despite the challenges she faced, Normani has since released singles and celebrated the release of her debut solo album, “Dopamine,” in June.

At the book event, Normani was joined by Keke Palmer and Law Roach, who emphasized the power of fashion as a tool for self-expression and identity. Roach’s book explores his unique approach to styling and shares lessons learned from his experiences in the fashion industry, encouraging readers to break the rules and embrace their individuality.
