St. Augustine’s University Faces Suspension from CIAA Athletic Competition

In a shocking turn of events, St. Augustine’s University has been suspended from athletic competition for the remainder of the academic and athletic year by the CIAA. The decision comes after years of struggles for the university, including the recent cancellation of their football program and the firing of head coach Howard Feggins.

The CIAA Board of Directors Chair, Dr. Aminta Breaux, expressed the difficulty of making such a decision but emphasized that it was necessary to protect the wellbeing and holistic experience of the student-athletes. St. Augustine’s was required to sponsor 10 sports to remain in compliance with NCAA Division II standards, a requirement that the university was unable to meet.

Despite the suspension, St. Augustine’s can still choose to compete in sports but will not be eligible for conference championships this season. CIAA commission Jacqie McWilliams Parker acknowledged the university’s long-standing history within the conference and expressed support for the Falcon family as they prepare to return for the 2025-26 season.

The news of St. Augustine’s suspension has sent shockwaves through the university community and the CIAA as a whole. With the future of the athletic program uncertain, all eyes will be on St. Augustine’s as they navigate this challenging time and work towards a successful return to competition in the coming years.
