Lupe Fiasco Reveals the History of Child Rebel Soldier with Kanye West and Pharrell

In a recent interview on Sway in the Morning, Lupe Fiasco opened up about the short-lived but impactful group Child Rebel Soldier, which consisted of himself, Kanye West, and Pharrell. The group released a few songs in the late 2000s, including the hit single “Us Placers,” but never went beyond that.

Lupe explained that despite still being on good terms with Kanye and Pharrell, the fans felt betrayed that the group didn’t release more music. He humorously blamed the lack of new material on the extravagant lifestyles of the two richest members of the group.

The rapper reminisced about the fan momentum around Child Rebel Soldier and how they had considered passing the torch to a new generation of artists. However, the idea never materialized, leading Lupe to attempt a solo revival of the group with a project called “Shrink,” which sampled Radiohead’s “Optimistic.”

Unfortunately, Radiohead was not on board with the project and sent a cease-and-desist, putting an end to Lupe’s attempt to bring back Child Rebel Soldier. Despite the setback, Lupe’s efforts to revive the group shed light on their impact on a new generation of creators.

The interview with Lupe Fiasco provides a fascinating insight into the rise and fall of Child Rebel Soldier and the challenges faced in trying to bring back the iconic group.
