Vice President Kamala Harris Signals New U.S. Approach to Alliance with Israel: Preview of “60 Minutes” Interview
Vice President Kamala Harris is signaling a potential shift in U.S. policy towards Israel if elected, according to a preview of her interview on “60 Minutes.” Democratic strategist Ameshia Cross noted that Harris is showcasing a desire for a different direction in the U.S. alliance with Israel.
During the interview, Harris was pressed by correspondent Bill Whitaker about Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s resistance to calls for a ceasefire. Harris emphasized the importance of diplomacy, ceasefire, hostage releases, and humanitarian aid in Gaza.
Cross praised Harris for navigating the delicate balance between her role as vice president and her potential future as president. She hinted at potential conditions for Israel if she were to be elected in November.
Criticism of Netanyahu’s leadership in Israel has been mounting, with calls for him to step down due to his handling of the conflict with Hamas. Foreign experts suggest that Netanyahu may be prolonging the war for political reasons.
Edward Ahmed Mitchell of CAIR called Netanyahu an anti-Arab racist, corrupt politician, and war criminal, urging Harris and President Biden to acknowledge that he is not a true ally of the U.S.
While Harris has not called for limiting arms and funding to Israel like some have suggested, she has been more vocal than Biden in calling for a ceasefire and acknowledging the suffering of innocent Palestinians. This issue is of concern to American voters, particularly young voters, Black voters, and Arab Americans.
Cross emphasized the importance of finding a better way to address the conflict, one that protects nations while also recognizing the suffering of innocent civilians caught in the crossfire. Harris’s approach to the Israel-U.S. alliance could potentially shape future relations between the two countries.
