Cleveland Browns QB Deshaun Watson Resolves Latest Civil Lawsuit
Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson has reached a confidential settlement in the latest civil lawsuit filed against him by a woman alleging sexual assault and battery. The plaintiff’s lawyer, Tony Buzbee, confirmed the resolution, putting an end to the legal battle.
The lawsuit, filed in September in Harris County, Texas, accused Watson of sexually assaulting the woman during a dinner date in her apartment in 2020. The woman sought damages exceeding $1 million. Watson, who vehemently denied the allegations, has previously settled nearly two dozen civil lawsuits.
The NFL had opened an investigation against Watson, and Buzbee had threatened to have his client speak to the league. It remains to be seen if Watson will face any further discipline from the NFL. The quarterback was suspended for the first 11 games of the 2022 season for violating the league’s personal conduct policy after multiple women accused him of sexual assault and inappropriate behavior during massage therapy sessions.
Despite the legal and off-field issues, Watson’s career with the Browns has not gone as planned. After signing a lucrative contract with the team, he made just six starts last season before suffering a shoulder injury that required surgery. This season, Watson has struggled in the Browns’ new offense, prompting questions about his performance and potential benching.
Coach Kevin Stefanski, however, has expressed support for Watson and confirmed that he will continue as the team’s starting quarterback. The settlement of the latest lawsuit brings a temporary resolution to the legal troubles surrounding Watson, allowing him to focus on his on-field performance and the remainder of the season.
