Black Man Found Hanging After Filing Police Brutality Lawsuit: Suicide or Foul Play?

The tragic death of Dennoriss Richardson, a Black man who filed a police brutality lawsuit against the Sheffield Police Department in Alabama, has left his family questioning whether his passing was truly a suicide or if foul play was involved.

Richardson, who had been subjected to what his lawsuit described as unconstitutional arrests and violence at the hands of local officers, was found hanging by a rope on the porch of an abandoned home near the Mississippi line. His family believes that his death was not a suicide, citing his joyful demeanor and lack of mental health issues.

The lawsuit alleged that Richardson was brutally beaten, sprayed with mace, denied food, and falsely charged with assault by the Sheffield Police Department. His wife claimed that the officers had harassed him for years and even offered to drop drug charges against him if he dropped the lawsuit, which he refused to do.

Sheriff Eric Balentine stated that Richardson appeared to have been depressed and worried about his future before his death, leading authorities to rule it a suicide. However, Richardson’s family is adamant that he would never harm himself and are awaiting the results of a private autopsy to determine the true cause of his death.

The motion filed by Richardson’s attorney demands the release of body camera footage and jail surveillance videos from incidents prior to his death, alleging that this evidence was previously denied to Richardson. The lawsuit names several Sheffield Police Department officers as defendants, including one who was fired for assaulting another Black man while off duty in 2022.

As the investigation into Richardson’s death continues, his family is determined to uncover the truth and seek justice for their loved one.
