MEAC Women’s Basketball Preseason Poll Results: Norfolk State and Howard Tied for First Place
Norfolk State Women’s Basketball Faces Uncertainty Despite Strong Season
Norfolk State’s women’s basketball team had an impressive 2023-24 regular season, finishing with a 13-1 MEAC record and winning the conference tournament to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament. With returning stars like All-MEAC guard Kierra Wheeler and conference player of the year Diamond Johnson, the Spartans seemed poised for another successful season.
However, when the MEAC preseason poll was released, Norfolk State found themselves tied with Howard for first-place points at 117 apiece. This unexpected outcome left many puzzled, as Norfolk State had been dominant in the conference in recent years, winning the title in back-to-back seasons and boasting a strong conference record.
Despite their success, voters couldn’t seem to agree on a clear favorite, with Coppin State predicted to finish third and other teams following closely behind. The lack of consensus left many questioning why Norfolk State wasn’t given the recognition they deserved as the reigning champions.
While Howard had shown promise by splitting the season series with Norfolk State and putting up a fight in the MEAC Tournament championship game, voters ultimately chose to play it safe and avoid making a definitive choice.
As the season approaches, Norfolk State will have to prove themselves once again on the court and show that they are indeed the team to beat in the MEAC. With a talented roster and a history of success, the Spartans will be looking to silence any doubts and reclaim their spot at the top of the conference standings.
