Running on Empty: Out of Gas and Unable to Finish

Dawson Odums Explains Decision to Go for Two in Close Loss to Florida A&M

In a heart-wrenching loss for Norfolk State, head coach Dawson Odums made a bold decision that ultimately fell short in a 24-23 defeat against Florida A&M in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge. After a blocked extra point attempt that was nullified due to a penalty, Odums opted to go for a two-point conversion from the 1-yard line with just over six minutes left in the game.

The reasoning behind this risky move? Odums could see his players giving everything they had, pushing themselves beyond their physical limits. With many players cramping up and the toll of the game taking its toll, Odums felt it was the right call to try and take the lead rather than risk running out of gas in the final minutes.

Despite the Spartans’ strong rushing performance throughout the game, the Florida A&M defense stood tall and stopped quarterback Jalen Daniels on a keeper at the line of scrimmage, sealing the victory for the defending HBCU national champions.

Odums defended his decision, citing the blocked kick earlier in the game and the team’s mindset to win at all costs. Linebacker Dylan Long echoed this sentiment, expressing his full trust in Odums and the team’s commitment to following their coach’s lead.

While the outcome was not what Norfolk State had hoped for, the team’s resilience and determination in the face of adversity were evident. As they regroup and prepare for the rest of the season, one thing is clear – they will continue to fight until the final whistle, no matter the circumstances.
