Texas Southern Dominates Prairie View in Coach Dishman’s Debut

In a stunning upset, Texas Southern University’s football team made a statement in their season opener by defeating defending SWAC West Champion Prairie View A&M University 27-9 at Panther Stadium. The victory marked new head coach Cris Dishman’s debut and the Tigers’ first Labor Day Classic win since 2014.

The key to Texas Southern’s success was their dominant defense, which shut down Prairie View’s running game, holding them to a mere 21 total yards on the ground. Linebackers Isaiah Bogerty and Jacob Williams, along with defensive lineman Keelan Cox, wreaked havoc in the Panthers’ backfield, combining for four sacks and four and a half tackles for loss.

On the offensive side, freshman running back Danny Green Jr. had a standout performance in his collegiate debut, rushing for 81 yards on 15 carries and scoring two touchdowns. Quarterback K.J. Cooper, a dual-threat player from Minnesota State Community and Technical College, provided a balanced attack with 126 passing yards and 52 rushing yards.

Texas Southern’s discipline also played a crucial role in their victory, as they only committed two penalties for 25 yards compared to Prairie View’s nine penalties for 89 yards. By staying focused and avoiding costly mistakes, the Tigers were able to control the game and secure the win.

Overall, Texas Southern’s impressive performance in all facets of the game set the tone for a promising season under Coach Dishman. With a strong start to the season, the Tigers are looking to build on this momentum and make a statement in the SWAC conference.
