Norfolk State Spartans Secure Home Opener Win, Avenging Last Season’s Loss to Virginia State Trojans

The Norfolk State Spartans came out victorious in their home opener against the Virginia State Trojans, avenging their loss from last season with a 28-23 win. This win not only snapped a 10-game home losing streak for Norfolk State but also marked their first win on their home field since 2021.

The Spartans’ offense had a standout performance, led by quarterback Jalen Daniels who threw for 210 yards and scored three touchdowns, two through the air and one on the ground. His connection with receiver Jaquez Jones, who had 109 receiving yards, proved to be a key factor in the game.

Running back Kevon King also had a big day, rushing for 137 yards and a touchdown, including a 64-yard scoring run. The Spartans’ defense stepped up as well, holding the Trojans to just 288 offensive yards compared to 487 in their previous matchup.

Despite Virginia State having opportunities to shift the momentum in their favor, including forcing turnovers and interceptions, they were unable to capitalize fully. A crucial fumble recovery by Norfolk State in the red zone led to a tying touchdown and ultimately swung the game in the Spartans’ favor.

Overall, it was a well-rounded performance by Norfolk State, showcasing their offensive firepower and defensive improvements. The win not only marked a significant victory for the team but also set the tone for a promising season ahead.
