Funkmaster Flex Faces FCC Complaint Over Comments Made About Afrika Bambaataa

The controversy surrounding Hip-Hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa has resurfaced once again, this time with Funkmaster Flex at the center of the storm. A recent appearance by Bambaataa on Flex’s show led to comments that have sparked outrage and a formal complaint from advocacy group Stands With Survivors.

During the show, Flex referenced Ronald “Bee-Stinger” Savage’s alleged recanting of his accusations against Bambaataa, stating that the word “pedophile” should not be used in connection with the Hip-Hop legend. Savage, who had previously accused Bambaataa of sexual abuse when he was a teenager, has since stated that he does not see Bambaataa as a pedophile and that the incidents were consensual.

The controversy has spilled over to the Universal Hip Hop Museum, where Bambaataa’s role as a co-founder has come under scrutiny. Advocacy group Hip Hop Stands With Survivors has called for the defunding of the museum and the removal of Executive Director Rocky Bucano due to Bambaataa’s association with the organization.

In response, Mayor Eric Adams has stated that the museum has cut ties with Bambaataa and the Zulu Nation since 2016. Bucano has also denied any affiliation with Bambaataa or the Zulu Nation, emphasizing the museum’s commitment to empowering and uplifting communities.

The allegations against Bambaataa date back to the 1970s, but he has consistently maintained his innocence. His attorney has denounced the defamatory statements made against him, calling them a reckless attempt to harm his reputation.

As the controversy continues to unfold, the future of the Universal Hip Hop Museum and Bambaataa’s legacy remains uncertain. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
