Mother Files Lawsuit Against School After Daughter’s Racist Encounter with Math Teacher
Amica Richardson, a mother from Elgin, Illinois, has filed a lawsuit against a local middle school after her daughter experienced a disturbing encounter with her math teacher. The incident, which occurred last year, has sparked outrage and legal action.
According to Richardson, her 11-year-old daughter, who was placed in an Individualized Education Program, was subjected to racist remarks by her math teacher. The teacher allegedly asked the young girl whether she should be called the N-word or Black, causing distress and humiliation.
The family’s civil rights attorney, Jack Casciato, revealed that six students corroborated the girl’s account, stating that they heard the derogatory term being used. The incident reportedly led to bullying and harassment of the young girl by her peers.
In response to the lawsuit, the Elgin School District U-46 emphasized their commitment to the well-being and education of their students, condemning any form of discrimination or derogatory language. The district stated that they do not endorse or tolerate such behavior.
The lawsuit names the school district, the Board of Education, the middle school, and the teacher as defendants, alleging a violation of the Civil Rights Act. Richardson expressed concern for her daughter’s mental health, noting that the incident has had a lasting impact on her well-being.
As the legal proceedings unfold, Richardson continues to advocate for justice for her daughter, who she says is still struggling psychologically with the aftermath of the traumatic encounter. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of addressing racism and discrimination in educational settings.
