Haitian Times Journalists Harassed and Intimidated for Covering Fake Story
The Haitian Times, a news site covering the Haitian community in the United States, has been facing harassment and intimidation after debunking a fake story about immigrants eating pets in an Ohio town. Journalists at the publication have received racist messages, threats, and vile posts, with one editor even being “swatted” with police showing up at her home to investigate a false report.
Despite the backlash, the Haitian Times is not backing down and continues to report on the aftermath of the fake story. Garry Pierre-Pierre, the founder and publisher, stated that their first duty is to tell the truth without fear or favor, and they have no fear in doing so.
The site, which averages 10,000 to 15,000 visitors a day, has received support from other journalists and organizations, including the Committee to Protect Journalists. Katherine Jacobsen, the program coordinator for the CPJ, called the harassment of journalists “outrageous” and emphasized the importance of standing up against such attacks.
The incident has shed light on the challenges faced by journalists in reporting on sensitive issues and the need for protection and support in the face of threats. The Haitian Times remains committed to its mission of covering issues affecting the Haitian community in the U.S. and will continue to do so despite the intimidation they have faced.
