Alcorn State Faces Challenges as SWAC West Preseason Favorite

Alcorn State, the presumptive preseason pick to win the SWAC West, is facing a rocky start to the regular season with a 1-3 record. Head coach Cedric Thomas expressed concerns about the team’s direction, execution, and maturity during a recent media session.

The Braves have been plagued by penalties, accumulating 34 infractions in just four games, ranking sixth in the SWAC. In their recent loss to McNeese, they racked up 10 penalties for 109 yards. Thomas emphasized the need for more discipline in order to improve their performance.

On the defensive side, Alcorn State has struggled to live up to its reputation, allowing an average of 36.3 points and 223.5 rushing yards per game. The lack of consistent tackling has been a major issue, with the once strong defensive front only registering two sacks.

Offensively, the Braves have scored just seven touchdowns and averaged 13.8 points per game, ranking near the bottom of the conference in scoring. Thomas highlighted the team’s lack of focus and execution as key areas for improvement.

The coach attributed some of the team’s struggles to immaturity, particularly among younger players making costly mistakes on the field. Despite the challenges, Thomas remains determined to turn things around and deliver a better performance for fans and the university.

As Alcorn State prepares to face Mississippi Valley State, the team is focused on addressing their issues and working together to compete for a division or conference championship. Thomas is committed to getting the team back on track and delivering a stronger performance in the upcoming games.
