U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee Introduces Resolution to Educate Republicans on the True Meaning of “Woke”

U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., is taking a stand against the misuse of the term “woke” by introducing a resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives. The resolution aims to educate Republicans on the true meaning of “woke” and its connection to Black culture and history.

Lee, who has a background in activism with the Black Panther Party, emphasized the importance of understanding the historical roots of the term. She stated, “Woke is deeply connected and rooted to Black history and our fight for social, racial, and economic justice.” Lee believes that the term has been intentionally weaponized by extremists to divide and conquer Black communities.

The resolution comes in response to efforts by Republican lawmakers, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, to target and dismantle laws and programs related to racial justice and diversity. DeSantis signed the “Stop WOKE Act” in Florida, which prohibits the teaching of concepts related to race or racism in businesses and schools.

Lee’s resolution calls out Republicans and the media for misusing the term “woke” and eroding its cultural connection to social justice. It is endorsed by the NAACP and mirrors the organization’s resolution affirming the term “woke.” The resolution highlights the long history of the term in Black culture, dating back to the early 1900s.

By introducing this resolution, Lee hopes to educate the public and promote a truth movement that will lead to reparative justice for Black communities. She emphasized the importance of staying vigilant against injustice and not allowing extremists to perpetuate it.
