Jon-Adrian “JJ” Velazquez Exonerated After Nearly 24 Years in Prison

After nearly 24 years in prison, Jon-Adrian “JJ” Velazquez has been officially exonerated of a murder he didn’t commit. The Manhattan judge vacated the wrongful conviction in the killing of retired NYPD officer Albert Ward during a robbery in 1998. Velazquez, now 48, donned a cap with the phrase “End of an Error” outside of court, celebrating with his mother and expressing gratitude for those who believed in him.

Velazquez’s case gained notoriety through documentaries, podcasts, a movie, and a book, raising questions about the justice system. Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg’s office joined Velazquez’s request to vacate the conviction, citing newly discovered DNA evidence that cleared his name. Bragg expressed hope for a new chapter for Velazquez.

Velazquez appeared in the movie “Sing Sing,” where he played himself alongside other former inmates. He had been sentenced to 25 years to life at Sing Sing before being granted early release in 2021. The case against Velazquez relied heavily on eyewitness accounts, two of which later recanted their statements.

Prosecutors reopened the case in 2022, comparing Velazquez’s DNA to evidence from the crime scene. The results showed no match, leading prosecutors to conclude that a retrial would be nearly impossible and unjust. Velazquez’s efforts to clear his name were supported by actor Martin Sheen and media coverage.

While in prison, Velazquez earned a bachelor’s degree, worked as a teaching fellow, and launched programs for gun violence prevention and youth mentorship. He continues to help other inmates appeal their convictions. Velazquez’s exoneration highlights the flaws in the justice system and the importance of fighting for justice and innocence.
