Federal Trial Outcome for Ex-Memphis Cops Involved in Tyre Nichols’ Death

The family of Tyre Nichols, a Black man who was brutally beaten to death by a group of Memphis police officers, finally saw some justice after a long and grueling federal trial. Five former officers were accused of the heinous crime, with three of them ultimately facing serious time for covering it up.

The incident occurred on the evening of Jan 7, 2023, when Nichols was pulled over for alleged reckless driving. The officers, part of the SCORPION Unit for street crime, cornered Nichols and proceeded to beat, kick, and pepper spray him until he was unrecognizable to his family. Body camera footage revealed the officers conspiring to downplay and hide their actions.

Last week, after a federal jury deliberated for six hours, three of the officers were found guilty of witness tampering related to the cover-up, facing up to 20 years in prison. However, they were acquitted on harsher charges that could have sent them to prison for life. The two officers who pleaded guilty also face significant prison time.

Despite the partial justice served, all five officers still face state charges of second-degree murder, pleading not guilty. Nichols’ family, while still seeking justice for his death, expressed some satisfaction with the verdict, calling it a bittersweet moment in their long journey for justice.

“This has been a long journey for our family. I’m actually in shock right now because I still can’t believe all the stuff that’s going on. But we’re happy that they all have been convicted and they have been arrested,” said RowVaughn Wells, Nichols’ mother.
